All workers should take precautions to limit the impact of the spread of COVID-19 (coronavirus). One of PhilaPOSH's major efforts for the past several years has been our free Fall Prevention training program. Our annual membership meeting will be held on Saturday, February 29! The meeting will feature guest speakers Nicole Kilgerman from the Pennsylvania Domestic Workers Alliance and Danielle Newsome, Labor Liasion at the Philadelphia District Attorney's Office. On January 13th, the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers (PFT) announced that they had successfully begun testing for asbestos at Carnell Elementary. This came after scheduled testing was delayed, forcing teachers and students to decide whether to come into school without test results. There have been multiple asbestos exposures in Philadelphia School District schools in the past months. We support the PFT's work to ensure safety in our schools, where an asbestos exposure can threaten students, teachers, and facility workers. We will be holding our annual Workers Memorial Day Program on Friday, April 24th. Every year, PhilaPOSH gathers injured workers, union members, lawyers, and health and safety professionals to honor those who have died on the job. Tragically, thousands of workers die every year in workplace incidents. As we reported in our 2019 Tri-State Fatality Report, there were more than 100 such deaths in Southeast Pennsylvania, southern New Jersey, and Delaware between April 2018 and April 2019.
